This method of improving skill level has been proven effective across all kinds of disciplines that require focus. The idea being to build your skill to where performance is effortless.

Technique is what defines your style. Do you use a lot of bends, do you use right hand tapping, are you fond of harmonics, and so forth. It is good to be comfortable with all of them, but most players find that they favor certain techniques over others.
