In the groove….the ultimate goal
Music Theory in a nutshell is the major scale. That is what we use to explain why a chord is called what it is called. The Major Scale is what we use to explain why other scales are called what they are called. It is what we use to figure out which chords work together. The Major Scale is what we use to figure out which scales work with which chords.
The reason for this is because the major scale is constructed of intervals, or rather distance from one note to the next. Those intervals, in the Major Scale, are : 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. The point being, these are unaltered intervals. In other words, the scale is not 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, b7 (flat 7), 8…..or 1, 2, b3 (flat 3), 4, 5, 6, b7….or whatever. Any scale, other than the Major scale, is going to have one or several altered (changed) interval or intervals. Note, or notes that have been either raised, lowered, or added to the original major scale formula of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 . The fact that the Major Scale is not altered in any way is the reason we use it to explain what everything else is called. It’s the scale that we compare every other scale to. For example, if a scale or a chord has a b3 (lowered 3rd….flat 3) in it, it will be a “minor” chord or a “minor” scale.
This is just the tip of the iceberg when it come to exploring music theory. It is a fascinating study and really opens up opportunities for creative adventure!

You can take the course studies without or without turning in assignments to be graded. However, to receive a certificate, all assignments need to be graded.
